This painting is part of a larger mural located in the semidome of the Coptic Red Monastery in Sohag, Egypt. Painted around the 6th century CE, it depicts the Blessed Virgin breast-feeding the child Jesus. The Holy Mother was very human, despite her great faith and humility. She performed all the functions that any mother would for her child: feeding, bathing, clothing, educating, protecting, guiding, and nurturing. Life was hard. But her faith in God kept her strong and resilient.
Can we do any less?
This Mother's Day, we honor our mothers and the deep bond that exists between mother and child.
